Kumamoto Castle

Isshingyo Great Cherry Tree

Location 3226-1 Nakamatsu, Minamiaso Village, Aso District, Kumamoto
Features A massive Yamazakura (wild cherry) tree boasting an age of approximately 400 years and a height of 14 meters. Legend says it was planted to mourn the souls of the lord of Yazaki Castle and his clan during the Sengoku period. Surrounded by a yellow carpet of rapeseed flowers and standing proudly against the backdrop of the Five Peaks of Aso, its presence is truly divine.

Ichifusa Dam Lake

Location Iwano, Mizukami Village, Kuma District, Kumamoto
Features Known as the "Ten Thousand Cherry Trees," this is one of Kyushu's top spots, with about 10,000 trees blooming along the 14km lake shore. In the center of the dam, one of Japan's largest fountains creates a stunning contrast with the pink blossoms. It is also a highly popular route for scenic drives.

Tachioka Nature Park

Location Hanazono-cho, Uto City, Kumamoto
Features Centering on Tachioka Pond and Hanazono Pond, which are said to have been constructed by Kato Kiyomasa, about 2,000 cherry trees line the water's edge. In full bloom, the sakura reflect on the water's surface, creating a mystical atmosphere. This is one of the best spots in the prefecture to enjoy cherry blossoms by the waterfront.

Suizenji Jojuen Garden

Location 8-1 Suizenji Koen, Chuo-ku, Kumamoto City, Kumamoto
Features A Momoyama-style stroll garden built over three generations starting with Lord Hosokawa Tadatoshi, the first lord of the Higo-Hosokawa Domain. Centering on a pond fed by the underground waters of Aso, the landscape replicates the fifty-three stations of the Tokaido road. Visitors can fully enjoy the harmony between the garden's refined beauty and the cherry blossoms.

Jagatani Park

Location 1598-1 Ryuganji, Tamana City, Kumamoto
Features A nature-rich park located near the Tamana Onsen district. Approximately 1,500 Yoshino cherry trees dye the park pink. With a giant slide, tennis courts, and other leisure facilities, it is an ideal spot for families to combine outdoor activities with flower viewing.

Yatsushiro Castle Ruins

Location 7-34 Matsuejyo-machi, Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto
Features The ruins of a castle built by Hosokawa Tadaoki (Sansai) as a retirement home. Cherry blossoms bloom around the moat and the beautiful ruins built entirely of stone. At night, the illumination creates a serene scene where the stone walls reflected on the water whisper the history of the castle town, Yatsushiro.

Honmyoji Park

Location 4-13-1 Hanazono, Nishi-ku, Kumamoto City, Kumamoto
Features Located on the hill behind Honmyoji Temple, which enshrines Kato Kiyomasa. From the observatory where his bronze statue stands, you can see a panoramic view of Kumamoto City. It is a luxurious spot where you can enjoy history, a city panorama, and cherry blossoms all at once.

Hitoyoshi Castle Ruins

Location Fumoto-machi, Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto
Features The seat of the Sagara clan, who ruled for about 700 years from the Kamakura period to the Meiji Restoration. Along the Kuma River, the stone walls—featuring the only "Musha-gaeshi" style of its kind in Japan—are adorned by about 230 cherry trees. The scenery of the clear Kuma River, historic walls, and sakura is well worth a visit.

Kikuchi Park

Location Waifu, Kikuchi City, Kumamoto
Features A park established on the ruins of Moriyama Castle, the residence of the Kikuchi clan who were prominent during the Nanboku-cho period. About 3,000 trees of 22 varieties, including Yoshino and mountain cherry trees, bloom in succession, allowing for a long viewing season. The path of cherry trees leading from the approach to Kikuchi Shrine is exceptionally beautiful.
